Chevrolet Captiva Service & Repair Manual: Starter, Replace

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove power brake booster auxiliary pump, as follows:
  a. With engine OFF, apply and release brake pedal several times until brake pedal becomes firm to deplete power vacuum brake booster vacuum reserve.
  b. Raise and support vehicle.
  c. Disconnect power brake booster pump hose quick connect (1), Fig. 1.
  d. Disconnect power brake booster pump electrical connector.
  e. Release power brake booster pump electrical connector retainer from pump bracket.
  f. Remove lower two power brake booster pump bolts (1), Fig. 2.
  g. Remove upper power brake booster pump bolt (1), Fig. 3.
  h. Remove power brake booster pump assembly.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Disconnect engine harness connector (1) from starter, Fig. 4.
5. Remove starter solenoid terminal nut (4), Fig. 4.
6. Remove positive battery cable terminal (3) from starter, Fig. 4.
7. Remove starter solenoid wire terminal (2) from starter, Fig. 4.
8. Remove starter mounting bolts (2), Fig. 5.
9. Remove starter (1), Fig. 5.
10. Reverse procedure to install, note following:
  a. Torque starter mounting bolts to 43 ft. lbs.
  b. Torque positive battery cable nut to starter solenoid to 80 inch lbs.
  c. Torque power brake booster auxiliary pump mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs.
